Broderick Gray is not exactly a novice in the U.S. Underground scene. While he picked up the guitar at an early age, he studied hard to develop an advanced guitar technique and is now considered a virtuoso of the Neo-Classical genre in the U.S. scene. While co-operating with many bands including Mass of Virtue, Final Prophecy and Truth be Told, Broderick was also constantly working on musical ideas for his solo project entitled "Sacred Will", a high energy Heavy Metal project with Neoclassical and Power Metal elements. In 2017 he returned to the studio to begin work on a new album called "Sacred Will". Many tracks are re-recorded new versions of songs written as far back as 1991. Even from a flashy listening, it's obvious that Broderick is deeply focused on executing powerful Neo-Classical Metal songs with catchy vocal melodies and one amazing riff after another. Many of his songs seem to be comprised of extraordinarily fast and extremely skillful playing, with interesting timing and key changes throughout. Another fact which I quite enjoy is that Broderick often flirts with Phrygian modes and there's a strong "ala turca" feeling in many of his songs. One bright example is "Dawn of the Dragon" a significantly wonderful track that makes known to people that there's much hidden quality out there, and also notifies that Virtuoso Guitarists are not an endangered species anymore. The nearly 10 minute long "Horizons of Glory" is another grand opus with a Phrygian-based riff and a very baroque atmosphere, with an incredibly epic final chorus as well. It is a song which also reveals Broderick's ability to compose lengthy tracks without even one dull second. Another strong point for Broderick's music is that it seems to possess a strong "80s Metal" feel at times: a distinctive drive and energy that seems to be missing from a lot of today's metal. What I notice about "Sacred Will" is that each and every song has something to add to the listener's joy! There are a variety of songs, from fast-paced and incredibly powerful Neoclassical pieces like "Requiem", and "Horizons of Glory", to outstanding emotional tracks like "Return" to ultra heavy thrash-based instrumentals like "Talisman". It's so rare nowadays to discover musicians that can compose memorable riffs in each and every song they record and Broderick Gray is definitely among the chosen few. The dreamy atmosphere that his music creates made me a huge fan of his work from the start and I am sure that everyone who hears it will feel the same. "Sacred Will" is an album destined for Neo-Classical Metal fans, Power Metal fans, Thrash Metal fans, and pretty much anyone who enjoys music with vision, passion and highly skilled performances.
